 Under 10s Girls Season Report

We started the season with a 2-0 win at Heygarth, which was really impressive as this was the first time the girls had been together as a group. We only had 1 player from last season and none of the others had played a competitive game of football.

Irby and Greenleas gave us a little more trouble but the gap closed at the end of the season in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Greenleas.

We won all of our games against Wirral rangers, and Manor took 3 attempts to beat us this year. Delta were our closest rival, we lost our first encounter but then went on to win the next 3 in league and cup. This is where we make a little history, being the first Upton girls team in a final.

We scored about 30 goals this season and conceded about 40, showing that we play a tight game and don’t give much away.

Partly due to discovering the bravest keeper in the league, Beccy, she was protected by dependable left back, Morgan, sparkling performances at right back, Charlotte, and determination all over the pitch from Caitlin.

The engine of the team; and where most goals came from (midfield) were the 3 E’s, Energised Emily, Enthusiastic Elisabeth, Entertaining Emma.

Our first choice strikers this season have been the talented pair, Georgia and Jasmine

Our last game, against Heygarth, we won 4-0 securing 4th spot in league. Sadly this would be the last time this team play together in the league as Emma and Beccy move to u12’s.

Thanks go out to all parents for their help and support this season, especially Jo Pugh for dealing with subs etc. and Keren Elson for bacon butties on Saturday mornings and providing our banner, flags and hair paint for the final

Management team:  Kelly Jones/ Steve Johnson

Under 10s Season Report

I’d just like to start by saying thank you for all the hard work that has been put in from all people associated to the team. Without you it wouldn’t have been possible for me to coach the team this season.

We had a very promising season this year. We had a strong start to the season and although results didn’t go our way half way through, the lads stuck to it and we finished strongly.

Again like last year we got to the semi final of a cup but couldn’t make it to the final yet again.

I have enjoyed coaching again this season. We had been practising new skills in training, which the team started to use when it came to matches.

As always it has been a pleasure working with the lads so I just want to say thank you for an enjoyable season and hopefully in the future the team will have much more success and maybe win a few pieces of silverware.

Thank you.

Under 10s Rangers Season Report

2008/2009 season has been another adventure for this team, Upton Rangers U10.  With new assistant Mike Lovelady joining the team we have worked on the basics; passing, ball control, correct shooting technique which resulted in steady improvement up until Christmas.  After Christmas we lost our sharpness and we were prepared for a few losses before that steady improvement returned.  Instead, in true grassroots fashion, we saw an explosion of development that outstripped everyone else in the league for a time.  Nevertheless for a couple of weeks we were the cat’s cream of that league or in the ‘zone’ as Pelé put it, two years work had paid off.

Upton Rangers U10 08/09 were: Tom Wilson aka ‘The Wall’, incredible shot stopper and committed goalkeeper.  Ben Frodsham – heart of a lion, so brave and must have taken at least 3 balls to the head in order to prevent 3 goals this season.  Luke Atkinson, responsible for pure white hot wit, so keen and a true learner, we think Luke is an Upton Coach of the future.  Mike Cooper who’s passing, distribution and skill is outstanding; Mike has also shown that he can play in several positions.  Ben Gaskell, Captain Fantastic, has been the heart of midfield this season leading by example by both defending and attacking seemingly at the same time.  Ben also has several excellent free kick goals to his name this season.  Alex Highton, probably capable of running a marathon even at under 10 level, incredible stamina and skills to boot.  James Robson, definitely one for the future.  James takes on board all advice given to him and has the best ball control in the team.  Ewan Clarke, terrier who will track and shepherd an opponent till the sun goes down, excellent at encouraging team mates and never gives up.  Joseph James – natural goal scorer who had parents, coaches and team mates thinking “goal” in their heads whenever he got through on goal.  Daniel Cardus, has improved significantly this season not only does he have excellent skill and determination but he also actively encourages his team mates.

Good luck to all the boys for next season.

Andy and Mike

Under 9s Season Report

We had to make a number of tough decisions at the start of the season in choosing our squad for the forthcoming season. In the end we decided to include 3 new players to the team and all of these have all turned out to be fantastic additions.

The team made a really good start too the season winning a number of games on the bounce and conceding very few goals. Mid way through the season we had a dip in form loosing and drawing a number of games for a few weeks. In all of the games the players produced some good performances and gave a very good account of themselves as they did throughout the season.

Nearing the end of the season we were involved in the knockout cup competition. The team managed to produce a number of great performances in order to reach the final on the 2nd May at Tranmere Rovers centre of excellence. During the first half of the game we went 2 – 0 down however this changed in the second half the match when we managed to pull it back to 2 – 2. It was a fantastic effort by every player. Sadly our opponent scored again in the last couple of minutes and went on to win the game 3 – 2.

Finally we would like to thank all the players and parents for the help and efforts throughout the season.

This was our first season as a team together and all things considered this has been a terrific year for the boys with a final placing mid-table. Not only have they all individually improved their football skills, they have also learnt how to play as a team together; something which was reflected in the good 4 game unbeaten run in the second half of the season. The boys have really pulled together and exceeded my expectations throughout the year.

Training at Weatherhead (the windy training pitch) we toughened up in the elements and worked heavily on ball control, 1 v 1 skills, heading, shooting, looking up, movement and star wars.

 Under 8s Season Report

2008/9 was a season of transition for Upton Under 8’s. Having had the same squad at under 6s and 7’s we were faced with an extremely difficult task of choosing 10 squad members from the 17 that trailed for us in August. We probably changed our minds half a dozen times but eventually chose our 10 players.  Unfortunately this meant that we had to leave behind 4 players that had been part of the Under 6 and 7 squad.

We have to give a special mention to the 4 new players who came into the side.  They commitment that they showed meant that the established players had to raise their game and this made choosing the starting 7 a difficult task every week.

We started the season well with a 3-1 victory.  One of our new players Matthew Benson scored a classic hat-trick, left foot, right foot and a header. – What a start.    Our second match ended in a 2-0 defeat but the boys responded well to win the next game.  Of the 24 matches played we won 18, lost 5 and had 1 draw.  Not a bad achievement for a new squad coached by two women.

The boys have progressed both individually and as a team. There is competition for all of the places and a number of players have adapted to changing their position to suit the team as and when required.

Once again we would like to thank the boys and their parents for the commitment that they have shown. Almost every week we had a full squad of 10 to choose from and there has been only one week when we had 7 players available.

We are looking forward to next season when the team will play competitive football for the first time. We have a great squad of players and hope that we can build on the excellent progress that the boys have made again this year.

Under 8’s Rangers and other Groups Report 08/09

The season began for us in August, with boys of varying age together in one group. As the group is mixed they have only been able to train but as the summer months approach, they will all have the opportunity to trial for the teams in their age groups and will definitely give the managers a headache when picking their squads for next season.

The boys have proved to be extremely dedicated and stayed well motivated throughout the year – with a consistent group of eight players week in week out providing smiles to light up the wet and windy Saturday mornings.

Each player completed their soccer skills in late May each to a high standard, and deserve the certificates they have been awarded. They have also had the chance to take part in the Gulliver’s World, and Everton trips, which those who attended thoroughly enjoyed.

I would like to thank the parents and players for their co-operation as well as Anne Hesketh and Steve Kell and finally Ryan Hudson, Liam Harrison and Bryony Coombs for their support this year.

Many Thanks,

Aaron Ramsbottom

Under 7s Season Report

Our first season in a league started off with a draw and lost but went from strength to strength.  Throughout the season we played all the teams several times and only lost two games all together.  E very player that has played  for Upton under 7s this season has given 100% for every game which has made my job very hard when selecting the starting 7 and making subs during the game.

Early this year, we also took part in an Everton tournament against teams from the two mini soccer leagues on the Wirral and played very well.  We lost 1, won 1 and drew 2 but overall stood out as one of the better teams

As well as the team success, Upton have had individual successes with several players being watched by Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere and currently one player is playing for the Tranmere under 8s team.

I am starting training in a week’s time for the next season and looking forward to the start of next season with is open to anyone who is currently in the second year of school.

In June, I have a team entered to play in the football festival at Vauxhall Motors and am looking forward to playing teams in which we haven’t come across as of yet.  I also have friendlies in line over the coming weeks to try and give us the best start into next season
