The big freeze was the winner this weekend with all Sunday games off for boys & adult teams. On saturday all the girls games were off as was most of the mini soccer games. Somehow however we managed to get 2 teams playing up at Ryecroft were they must have undersoil heating in place.
Mini Soccer
Under 7′s went down to a 8-1 defeat against Glenavon Hawks with Aaron Clausen Man Of Match.
Under 8′s – Following on from last weeks excellent 10 – 0 defeat of Manor River Plate, the boys followed it with another crushing 9 – 1 win. With some excellent passing and movement right from the start, we found ourselves a few goals up within no time at all. On one exciting first half attack the combination of post and bar were hit 5 times before the ball was finally forced home, and we went in at half time 5 – 0 ahead. The dominance continued through the second half, with only one lapse of concentration giving the opposition a consolation goal. An excellent performance all round by the boys. The goals came from Reon Mohr 3, Alex Clark 2, James Smith 2, Phillip Mcgowan and an og. Reon Mohr was Man of Match

Girls
Under 10′s recorded their highest win of the season with a 10 – 0 away win at New Brighton Saints. Anna Cull (3), Taylor Mayes (3), Ellen McGowan (2) and Yasmin Deplidge (2) scored the goals, whilst Taylor Mayes was player of the match.
Under 12s had another tough game against top half opposition in Manor. They created most of the chances in the game, but were thwarted by a resolute defence and good goalkeeping. When Manor scored from a loose ball at a corner with a few minutes to go, it looked as though the visitors were heading for a “smash and grab” raid on both points. However, Upton continued to create chances and Elizabeth Sullivan, having been thwarted by the keeper on more than one occasion, struck a sweet finish from the edge of the area to level the game. The team sprit, as all the substitutes ran on to celebrate with the players on the field, emphasized the great team spirit. Elizabeth Sullivan was player of the match.
Under 14 teams came face to face in the first “derby” between girls teams at Upton. The first half was a little muted, as both teams seemed uncertain about playing competitively against each other, but Upton opened the scoring when Aira Temporal’s chipped cross was headed in at the far post by Ellen Harding. The game picked up in the second half and Rangers equalised when Isabel Nolan was put through and held off the defenders to slip the ball home. Both teams created chances in difficult conditions, and both goalkeepers made excellent saves in the mud. Emily Sullivan, who had earlier hit the bar, restored Upton’s lead with a cool finish one on one with Sarah in the Rangers’ goal. Rangers looked to have equalised near the end when Jodie Williams’ long distance chip beat Charlotte in the Upton goal – most people in the ground, referee included, thought it had gone in, but the ball had actually landed on the back of the net. Charlotte Landrum, in goal for Upton, was their player of the match. Jodie Williams was Rangers’ player of the match. A great effort by all the players on both teams.
Under 16s were next to use a deteriorating Overchurch pitch, and got back into winning ways and ran out 5 – 1 winners against Delta Colts. Abbie Bateman scored 3, Louise O’Brien and Katie Rutter one each, whilst Holly Smith’s hard working performance earned her player of the match.
Boys
Under 11′s had a tough 4-4 draw against Peninsular Stars with goals from Aaron Finlay, Rhys Jones, Michael Pearsall & Lewis Harrison with Ewan Nolan Man of Match
Under 12′s got back to winning ways 3-1 against Peninsular Stars with 2 goals from Guy Stratton and 1 from Greg Saville with Dan Cardus Man of Match
Under 13′s beat West Kirby Wasps 4-1 with 2 goals from Charlie Weir and others from Connor Davies & Liam Siddorn with Connor also Man of Match.
Under 14′s overcame a poor first half performance to run out 5-1 winners against New Brighton with goals from Alex Pitt, Mitchell Duggan, Joe Murray, Scott Billington and George Thomson who was also Man of Match.
Under 15′s with 4 wins in 5 and a spirited peformance agains a strong Glenavon team took to the pitch expecting a tough but close game against a Manor team who had also had some decent results recently. However with injury and illness leaving only the bare bones 11 for Upton it was to prove a very difficult afternoon. Despite getting off to a strong start with some excellent wing play Upton found defensive lapses led to them being 5 down at half time. Although there was a positive rsponse in the second half Manor ran out comfortable winners, playing some excellent passing football on a very boggy pitch and were good value for their eventual 7-0 win. Upton will need to regroup and show some character in their next match. Standout performances from Casey and MoM Perryman, whilst Ives did well as an emergency full back and Parry had a very strong last 15 minutes. Back to the drawing board etc etc.

Upton Under 9′s entertained a lively Glenavon team at Leasowe today on what was a fine day to play football. Both ‘keepers were not needed to be called into action very much during the first half as all of the hard work from both teams was being undone by a solid defensive display from both teams and Upton’s Owen Burns, Reece Pirie and Joshua Lynch made sure that Zach Hemsworth was well protected. Reece Gannon was unlucky on a few occasions, coming close after a tremendous run and cross from the left by Lewis Heath. Both teams were intent on playing good, passing football and a really entertaining first half didn’t deserve the 0-0 scoreline that was served up. Substitutions were made at half-time and Mark Lewis replaced the tireless Reece Gannon like for like up front. Some good play from Connor Jones saw Mark Lewis released through the middle. Connor passed the ball through and Mark flicked the ball with the outside of his left foot into the air, then , what can only be described as a scissor kick volley, the ball flew hard and fast into the top right hand corner of the net. An unbelievable goal that turned the match. Glenavon’s heads dropped a little after that and, with ten minutes left, a shot from Jack Torpie was parried by the Glenavon ‘keeper. Mark Lewis used his size and strength and “resisted” the ‘keepers challenge, turned and buried the ball in the back of the net. 2-0 and Upton were out of sight. The third goal was another great piece of passing football. Mark out to Jack who stormed down the right, cut inside and with pace hit a beautiful effort that was only pushed away into the path of a grateful Lewis Heath. The little guy had ran his heart out all day and had followed the play right into the box and his reward came for that. 3-0. This display was encouraging in many ways as Glenavon team were well organised, quick and dangerous on the break. The patience shown from Upton is really proving to be the catalyst for our results. We are soaking up the pressure and then hitting back with a pacy, counterattacking style that is serving us well.

Under 10s had another close game against Irby, and seemed destined for a draw despite the lion’s share of the game until Anna Cull scored the winner for a 2 – 1 victory with a minute to go. Ellen McGowan scored the other goal and Taylor Mayes was awarded yet another player of the match award
Under 12s also played Irby, and again had by far the better of the game. Another trademark quality finish from Emma Johnson opened the scoring, but Irby managed an equaliser and, despite every effort of the Upton team, they couldn’t find a winner. Emma Johnson was player of the match.
Under 14s took the bare 7 players to the large pitch at the Delph, but everyone worked hard for the full hour to secure what was eventually a relatively comfortable 8 – 5 win. Great performances all around the pitch with captain Aira Temporal scoring 4 (including a shot into the top corner from just inside the opposition half), Georgia McGeough 2, Ellen Harding and Emily Sullivan one each. Hannah Smith nearly added a superb 9th goal with a free kick that just cleared the bar from over 25 yards. Aira Temporal was player of the match.
Under 14 Rangers took on the older Ridgewood Rangers, and didn’t get out of the blocks until the second half, by which time they were 3 – 1 down. However, they finished with the same level of performance that saw them nearly peg back Manor the week before to overturn the deficit and run out 5 – 3 winners. Jodie Williams scored 2, Isabel Nolan, Leah McNay and Poppy Buckley one each. Brittany White was player of the match.
Under 16s faced Greenleas in a return fixture, having won the first game 6 – 5. Recent results, including a draw with top of the table Wallasey Wanderers White, showed that Greenleas had improved on early season form and so it proved here, as they ran out 6 – 2 winners. Abbie Bateman scored both our goals, and Vicky Robinson was player of the match for Upton.

The Under 11′s had a comfortable 5-1 win against Wirral Rangers with 2 goals from Dominic Lund & Michael Pearsall and 1 from Ewan Nolan with John Adediran named Man of Match.
The Under 12′s were beaten 4-1 by Wirral Scorpions in yet another game they didnt get what they deserved from it. Guy Stratton scored the goal with Mike Cooper getting the Man of Match.
The Under 13′s were very unlucky to lose 4-3 to Wallasey Wanderers after a great performance from the lads. Goals from Ben Casey, Charlie Weir and Adam Sunners who was also Man of the Match.
The Under 14′s produced a fantastic display to beat reigning champions Manor 6-2 and replace them at the top of the table with a hat trick from Scott Billington and 2 from Christopher Turk, Alex Pitt got the other goal with Ben Stobbart Man of The Match.
The Under 15s would like to express their sympathy and warm wishes for a speedy recovery to Tobi Lamb (Captain) following the broken leg he received in the match against Greenleas at Upton Park. The club would like to extend their thanks to the match referee, Bill Downey, and the parents of Greenleas football club who helped deal with injury. At the time of the injury Upton were leading 2-0 with goals from Aspinall and Hoijord-Beard.”

Under 9′s – It was typical end to end stuff by two good footballing teams with both ‘keepers having to make some good saves. Spartans almost lead before half-time with a great strike that was instinctively pushed behind from Zach Hemsworth from a free kick that came through a crowd of players. Upton reacted admirably and never once retaliated as they endured some crunching high tackles and the reward came with two minutes of time remaining. Connor Jones went on another “mazy” run and passed to Reece Gannon just inside the Spartans box. A first time pass to Mark Lewis produced a left footed shot that the ‘keeper could only parry to Reece Gannon who had followed the play after his initial pass. Hit first time on his right foot, it flew past the right hand of the hapless Spartans ‘keeper. Cue celebrations and much fist pumping. All in all this was another amazing team performance, full of passion and pride and, again, maturity beyond their years. However, a mention must be made with regards to Josh Lynch who stepped up to the mark again today to produce an amazing performance in defence to add to what is already an impressive start to the season for him. Simple, effective and cool under pressure, he pushed the impressive Connor Jones for his man of the match award today but Connor just pipped him to the honour. Well done everyone.

Under 10s played top of the table Manor. In the first game of the season, Manor had been winning 6 – 0 when the game was abandoned. A sign of the team’s improvement is that at half time this was 0 – 0. Heads went down a bit after Manor scored, but the girls got back into it at 2 – 1 before a late barrage of goals made the score 7 – 1, which didn’t reflect the progress the team has made. Scorer was Ellen McGowan, player of the match Yasmin Deplidge for some outstanding saves.
The Under 12s had the “advantage” of being the first team to play on the mud bath at Overchurch. Another battling performance with Player of the Match Emma Johnson levelling the scores after Heygarth Utd had taken the lead, before Shannon Navarro forced home the winner from close range for a 2 – 1 victory. An unexpected defeat for Manor means the team is now equal on points with Manor, behind Rakers, making the fixture in two weeks time all the more tantalising!
Under 14s played on a big pitch with large goals, and very long grass, but ran out ready winners by 7 – 1 against Ridgewood Rangers. Scorers to follow but Emily Sullivan was awarded player of the match. Some great passing moves and stalwart defending, and good to see captain Aira Temporal back after injury.
Back at the (deteriorating) surface at Overchurch, Under 14 Rangers lost 4 – 3 to Manor in an excellent game. Manager Neil McNay was justifiably proud of the committed performance put in by the whole team against a Manor side who had beaten the other under 14 team 9 – 1 a fortnight ago. All the more impressive was the attitude shown in coming back from 4 – 1 down early in the second half and the team certainly deserved at least a point here. Isabel Nolan scored two and was player of the match, Leah McNay scored the other
The Under 16s had the worst of the conditions and top of the table opposition. Both teams did well to play an entertaining game on a wretched surface, and the 5 – 1 result to Wallasey Wanderers White does not reflect the tremendous effort put in by all the players. Louise O’Brien scored our only goal, and Jess Taylor was awarded yet another player of the match award for a committed and brave goalkeeping performance
Boys
The Under 11′s had a closely fought 4-3 victory against FC Blades with 2 goals from Ewan Nolan, 1 from Aidan Keogh and John Adediran grabbing the other and the Man of Match award.
The Under 12′s went down 7-3 to Beechwood Falcons again somewhat unluckily on the balance of play, Guy Stratton scored 2 and won Man of Match with Peter Doogan scoring the other goal.
The Under 13′s bounced back from their penalty shoot out defeat last week to beat high flying Birkenhead Youth 2-1 with goals from Joe Abraham and Ethan Doran with Mike King taking the Man of Match.
The Under 14′s game was called off
The Under 15′s - The U15′s good run came to an abrupt end as they came up against a very physically strong and technically good Glenavon team. Upton started strong, with Walker, slotting in at centre-back to cover absences, testing the home kepper with a long range free kick. Glenavon though started to come into the game, winning more 50-50s and their wingers began to get the ball on the deck and put the Upton defence on the back foot. Two well struck goals gave Glenavon a deserved lead but Upton started to find their feet again with some good counter attacking play and Scott looked particularly threatening against his old club, with Hoijord-Beard working the line very well. However the home side scored another before the break and must have gone in expecting to score a hatful in the second half. Upton though weren’t prepared to lie down and came out fighting right from the start of the second half, playing better possession football and once Walker was restored to the centre forward role they started looking a real threat. Walker slipped Aspinall through for a deserved goal and Upton then had a period of sustained pressure, with the Glenavon replacement kepper pulling off several good saves, including a world class one from Casey. Glenavon though showed their ability, scoring a fourth on the break before adding a further one just before full time. Full credit to the lads who played some exciting attacking football in the second half and looked a solid team unit throughout. This should encourage them that they have the talent to do well but that at the top levels fitness, tackling and strength are absolutely essential. Upton man of the match Aspinall.

The Under 7′s continued their improved run of results with another victory 2-0 against AC Hoylake with both goals from Luke O Keefe with Paul New Man of Match.
The Under 8′s (No Details Yet)
The Under 9′s played against Glenavon Eagles in the Knockout Cup QF and put up a tremendous performance. The match was 1-1 at full time before Upton heartbreakingly lost 3-2 after extra time, hopefully they can go further in the Challenge Cup and put this result behind them. Matt Benson and Ben Mcallister got the goals with Ally Hughes Man of Match for a great performance in goal.
The Under 10′s report is supplied by Mark Lewis- A close fought game from start to finish, it could have been won by either side. Manor were quite physical but a mature display by Upton, including a couple of brave, world class saves by ‘keeper Zach Hemsworth, contributed to another clean sheet and when the first real clear cut chance came six minutes from the end, Reece Gannon kept his head to shoot powerfully past the Manor ‘keeper into the top left hand corner of the net.
To conclude:- a mature performance full of patience kept Upton in contention for a top three place this evening. Teamwork was the essence of this victory
Girls
Under 10s – another close game against Heygarth, with Taylor Mayes scoring the only goal in the game, and also being awarded P-O-M
Under 12s – disappointingly had a walkover against Heygarth Juniors
Under 14s – had the handicap of only 6 players and a dodgy manager!! as they took on top of the league Wirral Hawks Ladies on the sloping Victoria Park pitch. They were 6-1 down at one point but rallied and drew the second half 4-4 playing up the slope a great effort from all the girls especially as a number of them were playing out of position. They eventually lost 10-7 with lots of positives coming from the game. Georgia Mcgough 5, Ellen Harding and Emily Sullivan who was also Player of Match got the goals.
Under 14 Rangers – another game where 7 a side with 11 a side goals distorted the score, ending in a 7 – 7 draw. Ebbed and flowed, but the team ddi really well to come back from 7 – 5 down and equalised in the last mniute with their best move of the match. Goals from Isabel Nolan (3), Leah McNay (2), Ceri Duff and Amy Webster – Brittany White was P-O-M
Under 16s – regular keeper away this week, so all the more impressive recording an 8 – 0 win at Waverton. Abbie Bateman, Katie Rutter and Louise O’Brien scored 2 each, Freya Mumford and Jess Davies one each, with Jess Davies the P-O-M

There were free weeks for the Under 11 & Under 12′s
The Under 13′s were in Cheshire Cup action and were leading 1-0 at half time in a tight game. They conceded a second half equaliser and after no more goals in normal and extra time the game was decided on penalties with Upton unfortunately losing 5-3. A great effort from the lads and hopefully they will bounce back in the league this week. Joe Abrahams got the goal with Liam Siddorn Man of Match.
The Under 14′s went goal crazy for the second week running beating Delta Colts 10-0 as their fine form carries on. Callum Mernock 2, Joe Murray 2, Scott Billington 2, Mitchell Duggan 2 and Man of Match and 1 each from Alex Pitt & Chrsitopher Turk saw the lads home.
The Under 15s continued their fine goalscoring form as they eased to a 6-0 win over Wallasey Wanderers in an ill-tempered game at Upton Park. With the visitors playing a high line Upton expoited the space on the wings to get in behind the defence with good wing play and found themselves 2 up in the first 5 minutes. The opening goal was a stunning drive from Owens, with Hoijord-Beard tapping in for a second. Walker then came off the bench to notch a quick-fire perfect hat-trick. With Upton 5 up at half-time the second half was a very low key affair as the home side created a number of good chances but converted only 1. As players were swapped around Wanderers came into the game more, and had the opportunity to get on the score sheet, with substitute keeper Lamb pulling off a stunning last minute save to keep the clean sheet. Another very good team performance, with Aspinall again influential and Evans showing his defensive capabilities, breaking up play well no matter what position he played. The team now have 3 tough matches ahead, with Glenavon next up
The Youth Team had a Cheshire Fa Youth Cup match against Rudheath Youth and continued their great recent form with a 2-1 win, both goals from Mike Mcgreary.
The Open Age had an entertaining 3-3 draw with The Lord Nelson.
