Under 12s End of Season Report 2007/08

June 23, 2008 · Filed Under Upton FC - Under 12

Pre season training brought together a squad of players that could build on the success of last year and we knew with the two leagues becoming one, this would offer us a greater challenge but one that we all were looking forward too.

The early part of the season did not go as planned or hoped we suffered 4 losses in the first 6 weeks something that had never happened to us before, even in mini soccer. However the superb character and skills of the players turned this around and wins were again coming with each match we played.

The lack of confidence that was evident in the early part of the season was ending, particular after we secured our biggest ever win and what turned out to be the biggest score of the season in the league a 20–0 win (A goal every three minutes).

The team suffered a number of injuries and a suspension which did not help with continuity of the team however the beauty of a strong squad is that it offered opportunities for other players to state their claim for a starting position.

Mike Askew continued to make wonder saves (which has been noted by Tranmere Rovers) and he was supported by a defence that had to work much harder this season than last, but they will benefit from this next season. The midfield continued to work tirelessly defending and creating chances. The forwards continued to take there chances and regularly terrified defence with their pace and shooting ability.

Unfortunately due to poor weather there were no Divisional cups played this season which is a big disappointment because although we lacked the consistency to win the league on our day we can beat anyone, and I would have fancied our chances in a cup.

The league itself finished earlier than expected with a number of matches still outstanding, we still had 10 games to play when the decision was made to void the league due to unavailability of pitches - a dire position to be in. Although we could not have won the league, my sympathy goes to the teams battling for the title who knows who would have won it?!

The players showed that they can compete with the best team but have got to start believing in themselves!

Many thanks to all the players for the support and commitment to Upton Football Club not only on match days but also at training even on the wet and very cold nights. As coach of the team although we did not win any silverware, it is a great pleasure watching you learn and develop your football skills, which I am sure is echoed by the supporters who have watched the matches over this season.

For the record, we played 24, won 11, drew 3, lost 10 scored 105 goals and conceded 55.
