Under 14s End of Season Report 2007/08

June 23, 2008 · Filed Under Upton FC - Under 14

Having finished runners up in the B league last year the under 14’s were faced with the challenge of the A and B league joining together, and finding out how we could compete with the teams from last season’s A league.

When the fixtures came out we knew it would not be long before we found out as our first six games saw us playing teams from last year’s A league. Four convincing wins and then two narrow defeats against last season’s champions and runners up convinced me the lads were more than capable of holding their own against the stronger teams.

The lads were putting in some brilliant performances winning the next five games including a fantastic 1-0 win against Greenleas who had beaten us earlier on in the season, the passing and movement from the lads in this game was so good that the Greenleas manager told me it was the best football he had seen any team play all season.

In the New Year the lads faced Liscard Panthers from the Eastham league in the quarter final of the Wirral Cup, in a close game that could have gone either way we were unlucky to lose 3-1, but once again we put in a good performance against a good side.

The good form in the league continued and our second to last game of the season saw us playing the wasps, a win would mean we would finish above them in the league in fourth place, we managed to take the lead from a penalty early in the second half, as the game entered the closing stages it looked as if the lads had got the result we were looking for, but unfortunately the wasps scored on the brake in the last minute of the game, this meant we finished the season on the same points and shared fourth place.

The lads can be very pleased with the way they have performed this season, and hopefully they are looking forward to next season, I am sure if they work as hard as they did this season there is no reason why we should not finish even higher in the league next year. I would like to thank the lads for the commitment, and for all the hard work they have put in. The lads parents have every reason to be proud of the way they have behaved on and off the pitch.

Finally I would like to thank the parents who have helped on match days with the nets and lifts, thanks to Derek Powell for standing in as ref when needed. Special thanks go to my assistant Chris Camden whose help and support in particular with the coaching have been a great help to me. I hope you all enjoy the summer break, and look forward, to another great season next year.

Paul.
