Upton Girls Great Effort in Tournament

June 29, 2011 · Filed Under Club News, Upton FC - Girls Football · Comment

Upton girls sent an Under 13 team to take part in an Under 14 Tournament in Ellesmere Port last week. The girls finished top of their group and then came up against Buckley Town in the QF winning through on penalties. This pattern continued as in the semi final the girls beat Ellesmere Port Rovers on penalties to go through to the final against Birkdale Diamonds who had won their own league & cup double. This time the girls came off second best losing on penalties but they went through the whole tournament not conceding a goal in open play and were as good as any team despite being younger than most. Well done girls

Double Delight for Upton Girls

There were 2 extra special awards given out at this year Presentation Day as 2 of our girls were voted Wallasey League Player of the Year. Winning these awards is no mean feat as every player in the league is a possible winner. After each game the  managers have to pick a player of the match from the other team and at the end of the season the player with the most awards win the title. This year we are delighted to say that Talor Mayes from our Under 10 Girls and Jess Taylor from our Under 16 Girls both won their respective age awards.  This is a fantastic achievement by both girls and all connected to the club congratulate them.

The u12 girl’s epic season continued today, they travelled to Liverpool to play in the Reece Jones memorial trophy and came home victorious. It was a very competitive contest with Upton recording a draw in the 1st 3 games, after lunch it all clicked and superb goals from Elizabeth Sullivan, Emily Sullivan and Emma Johnson secured our first 3 points, we went into the last game needing a win to reach the final, we edged into the lead in the second half and some great defending from the very cool Libby Boulger, supported by (captain for the day) Morgan Mayes and younger sister Taylor Mayes who worked hard and kept the opposition out. Top midfielder Jessica Farrell also deserves a mention for her effort and work rate through out the day linking up beautifully with the other players. The Final was a very tight game, Upton struck 1st through Shannon Navarro who made no mistake from 5 yards, however we went to penalties when St Annes equalised with minutes to go.The game went to penalties (3 each) Emma coolly struck a hard low shot into the corner, the goal keepers came out on top for the rest, the last save was met by 9 screaming Upton players running to congratulate Emily for a terrific save which meant we had won the Reece Jones memorial trophy 2-1, which has rounded off a phenomenal year for the girls. Well done to all the players who have put Upton Girls firmly on the Merseyside map, their skill and behaviour throughout the day was exemplary, they are a credit to the club and their parents

Under 14 Girls Put up Brave Fight in Final

Upton Under 14 Girls ended their season with a Challenge Cup Final against a very good Manor Bullets side at a rain soaked Glen last week. The girls gave their all but couldn’t get past a strong Manor defence and eventually went down to defeat despite their best efforts. It’s been a tough year for the girls with short numbers on players and no keeper shown by 4 different goalies in the final so to reach a cup final was a great achievement, well done girls for a great effort
